BIOGRAPHY
Colombian Tubist David Lopez has enjoyed a prolific international performance and teaching career having previously served as principal tuba of the Banda Sinfonica de la Ceja del Tambo, under the baton of Juan Felipe Arias Villa, as well as the Department of Antioquia Wind Symphony, Quinteto Brass of Medellin, the Latin America Wind Symphony (Manizales, Colombia), and the Medellin Philharmonic Orchestra. He played on such operas as La Traviata, Rigoletto, and La Boheme. Since relocating to the United States in 2010, Lopez has served as principal tubist of the North Texas Wind Symphony, under the baton of Eugene Corporon, the Texas Tech University Symphony Orchestra, and the Texas Tech Wind Ensemble. Additionally, he has performed with the American Wind Symphony Orchestra (AWSO), the Texas Tech University Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble, the UNT Symphonic Band, and the UNT Brass Band, under the baton of Dr. Brian Bowman. He has also performed with the All-Stars Collegiate Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble at the ITEA Conference in Tucson, AZ.
Lopez can be heard on several recordings including Voicings with the North Texas Wind Symphony (2013), Audibles with the North Texas Wind Symphony (2012), Jingle Them Bells with the University of North Texas Symphonic Band (2012), and the Quinteto Brass of Medellin on their album, Porros Inolvidables, (2008).
As a teaching artist, Lopez frequently presents masterclasses and teaches lessons internationally in the U.S. and Colombia with special emphasis on fundamentals of tuba performance for developing musicians. He has formerly taught in the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex and currently is the Low Brass Instructor for Wayland Baptist University and Lubbock Christian University and maintains an active private studio in Lubbock, TX. He has taught in Colombia at the Escuela de Formacion in La Ceja and at the Universidad de Antioquia in Medellin. He has also been a teaching fellow at the University of North Texas where he taught a private studio, Tuba fundamentals, and conducted the 8 O'Clock Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble.
As a sought after translator, he has collaborated with Banacol S.A., National Geographic, the University of North Texas Intensive Language Institute, and in his most recent projects, legendary tubist Roger Bobo. David actively uses his skills to make literature and information available to tuba players in Spanish speaking countries.
Lopez holds a DMA in Tuba Performance from Texas Tech University, holds a Masters of Music in Tuba performance from the University of North Texas, and a Bachelors in Translation Studies from the Universidad de Antioquia in Medellin, Colombia. Additionally, he was awarded the prestigious COLFUTURO fellowship and the Jovenes Talentos award from Colombian government to study music in the United States. His primary teachers are Don Little, Kevin Wass, Ryan Robinson, Juan Felipe Arias Villa, Victor Arango, and Juan Erney Sepuvelda,
David is a member of the International Tuba and Euphonium Association (ITEA) and performs on a 1962 Mirafone 186CC and a Miraphone Firebird.
